Bioluminescence Kayaking in Havelock: Best Time, Price and Tips
Yes, you can see glowing water in Havelock. The blue light comes from tiny sea plankton that shine when the water moves. The best way to see it is from a kayak in the darkest hours before dawn, around 3 to 5 AM. Our bioluminescence kayaking trip costs ₹2,500 per person, inclusive of GST. It works best on dark, low-moon nights from November to February.
What is bioluminescence?
Bioluminescence is light made by living things. In the sea around Havelock, it comes from very small plankton. They are too small to see with your eyes. When something moves the water, like a wave, a fish or your paddle, they give off a short flash of blue-green light.
One flash is tiny. But when a large number of plankton light up together, you see a clear glow around your paddle and a light trail behind your kayak. If you move your hand through the water, you may see small sparks around your fingers.
Does the water in Havelock glow every night?
No. The glow changes from night to night, and nature decides how bright it will be. We can never promise it. These are the main things that affect it:
- The moon. This is the biggest factor. A bright moon lights up the sky and the glow becomes hard to see. On dark nights with little or no moon, the same glow looks much stronger.
- The season. November to February is the best time. The weather is dry and the sea is usually calm.
- Light around you. Lights from the shore, torches and phone screens all make the glow harder to see. Darker is better.
Use the moon calendar to pick your date
Our bioluminescence calendar shows the moon phase for each night. Before you book your flights and ferry, check it and plan your Havelock days around the darker nights.
If your dates fall near a full moon, we will tell you honestly that the glow may be weak. You can then decide whether to go, or to choose the sunrise or sunset trip instead.
What happens on the trip
Before you start
We pick you up from your hotel if it is within 5 km. Pickup from Kalapathar or Radhanagar Beach costs extra. At the starting point, your guide fits your life jacket and gives you a short safety briefing. You also learn how to hold the paddle and how to steer.
On the water
You paddle slowly into the dark, with your guide close by. Once you are away from the shore lights, you stop and let your eyes get used to the dark. Then you move your paddle through the water and watch for the glow. From then on, each stroke can leave a blue trail.
The trip lasts 1.5 to 2 hours. By the time you come back, the sky is often starting to turn light.
Group size
Groups are small, with a maximum of 6 guests per session. This keeps the trip quiet and lets the guide stay close to everyone.

Is it safe to kayak in the dark?
Yes, with the right care. Everyone wears a life jacket for the whole trip, and you do not need to know swimming. The guide gives a safety briefing before you start and stays with the group on the water. Groups are small, so the guide can keep an eye on every kayak.
Havelock Kayaking is run by the team at Frogman Scuba Diving Centre in Govind Nagar, Havelock. Frogman has run water trips on Havelock since 2017.
What to wear and bring
- Clothes: quick-dry shorts and a light t-shirt. Avoid cotton, because it stays wet. A light jacket helps in the early morning.
- Footwear: sandals with a back strap. Loose slippers can come off.
- Phone: keep it in a waterproof pouch, with the screen off. Phone cameras find it very hard to capture the glow, so enjoy it with your eyes.
- Torch: please keep torches off on the water unless the guide asks. Light makes the glow harder to see for everyone.
Bioluminescence or sunrise: which should you pick?
If you want to see the glowing water, choose the bioluminescence trip and pick a dark night from the calendar. If you do not want to wake up at 3 AM, or your dates are near a full moon, the sunrise or sunset trip is a good choice. If you have a few days on Havelock, you can do one of each.

FAQs
Is the glow guaranteed?
No. Bioluminescence is natural, and its brightness changes from night to night. Dark, low-moon nights in November to February give you the best chance, but nobody can promise it.
How much does bioluminescence kayaking cost in Havelock?

Can I photograph the glow with my phone?
You can try, but most phone cameras cannot capture it well. The glow is faint and moves fast. Most guests enjoy it more with the phone put away.
Can children join?
Yes. Children aged 5 and above are welcome. A parent and child can share a double kayak.
What if I need to cancel?
If you cancel 72 hours or more before your slot, you get a full refund minus the 5% payment gateway fee and GST. Inside 72 hours, or if you do not show up, there is no refund. Bookings dated 15 December to 15 January are non-refundable.
